They say the biggest risk is wanting to stay... That is the best way to describe my experience in Colombia, because staying was never part of the plan. I arrived in 2012, a recent college graduate eager to return to Latin America for adventure, to step outside my comfort zone and perfect my Spanish. The original plan was 1 year, 2 years tops. But life is full of surprises... Each year presented itself with a new opportunity, a job, love, a better job, heartbreak, community, I blinked and Colombia became home.
Over a decade of culture shock, figuring out how things work, local job opportunities, remote work, housing searches and more, I learned a lot about how things work in Colombia along the way. I became the go to person in my circles for how to for all things in Colombia, travels, job searches, visas, marriages, banking, etc - the fun and the not so fun of living in Colombia. When the information wasn’t readily available or non-existent, I had to figure it out- and there was a lot of trial, error and frustration along the way.
The idea for Colombia Connects started as a brainchild developed years ago, something I’d start one day, ‘when the time was right’. In 2023 I guided a friend through a complicated visa process and she asked, ‘’How do you know so much more than my lawyer?’’ ‘’Because I’ve lived it all myself and done it all myself’’ and with that response, I knew it was time to make Colombia Connects a reality.
